Description

Coding Educator- Remote

General Summary:

The Coding Educator is responsible for coordinating and conducting coding training and developing training content and materials for the Franciscan Alliance Corporate Coding Department. This position ensures training practices are standardized and result in consistent coding outcomes as well as provides input regarding the content of policies and procedures and ensures all new and existing staff members are trained and adhere to current coding policies and procedures. The Corporate Coding leadership team relies upon this position to be an authority and expert in interpreting and applying coding guidelines in order to achieve consistency in coding practices. 

Candidates can choose to work remotely or at one of select facilities within our organization.   Additionally, Franciscan Health values continuing education and offers CEU opportunities and tuition assistance.

Mission and Philosophy Statement

The health ministry of Franciscan Alliance, Inc. (Franciscan) is a continuation of the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and is carried out in our Franciscan tradition by the Sisters, coworkers, physicians, volunteers, and boards of each institution of the health system. Each Franciscan Alliance coworker acknowledges this corporate health ministry and shares responsibility with other System coworkers for implementation of the Sisters’ mission and philosophy in the work performed throughout this corporate ministry.

Essential Job Functions

• Develops and maintains a consistent coding operations orientation program and reports the coders' progress to Coding Leadership throughout the orientation and training processes. Develops and maintains all corporate coding education, training policies and procedures, and coding reference materials.

• Prepares education material based on audit results and reviews material with the coding staff impacted.

• Assists corporate coding leadership with training and/or development of a performance improvement track for coding employees in the disciplinary process related to quality or productivity performance.

• Assists with Coding Supervisor with reviewing and responding to external coding audits. Assists with annual verification of coding staff credentials.

• Act as a subject matter expert regarding payer reimbursement methodologies and official coding guidelines.

·        Ensure corporate coding policy and procedures, coding compliance plans, and operational workflows are maintained and standardized.

·        Oversee coding edits software updates and communication of significant changes to regional coding management teams

• Monitors changes to coding methodologies, official coding guidelines, regulatory standards, reimbursement schemes. Develops training material and communication plan for these changes. 

·        Answers coding questions from Coding staff.

• Orients new physicians with regards to the coding department's role in the revenue cycle and prepare training material for coding related to physician education.

• Maintains EPIC CT trainer status for Coding/HIM.



Requirements

Experience:

Required- 5 years’ experience relevant to the Coding Educator positions assigned specialties

Preferred- Three years’ experience as a Coding Manager or Trainer/Auditor

Certification:

Hospital Inpatient/Hospital Outpatient

Required- CCS

Preferred- RHIT/RHIA

Professional

Required- CCS, CPC, CCS-P

Preferred- RHIT/RHIA
